I have encountered a black snake with a lighter yellowish belly recently and Im not sure what kind of snake it is. The first thing I thought was Water Mocassin but all the pictures I see doenst resemble it. Do you guys have any idea what kind of snake lives in the water (a big ditch) and is black with a yellowish belly. If so it would help me out tremendously.
Thanks,
Nathan R

I would have to see the snake to be sure, but I think you have a Yellow Bellied Water Snake. They are non venomous, but do have diamond shaped heads. A VERY common snake around water and swamp areas. Be carefull becuase even though I think what you have is non venomous, like I said I would have to see it to be sure. So dont get bit! Good luck!

I encountered a snake in the water at Table Rock Lake near Branson, MO over the weekend. When we asked what it was, we were told it was a water mocassin, but it was harmless. It was very skitish and immediately dived into the water from a sunning position on a boat motor.
Should we be very cautious of these snakes or are they harmless as stated? Also what type of snake could it be if it is not a mocassin as they said?
