hi alex
the hermanns tortoise has a shell length about 20cm in length. the upper shell is strongly domed, differs from other europeon tortoises in having no spurs on the thighs usually TWO supracaudal plates above the tail.
the marginated tortoise is about 38cm in shell length , mature males are very distinctive upper shell is strongly flared at the rear. they are separated by the hermanns tortoise because it has ONE supracaudal plate above the tail. they are much darker in couler aswell usually black with bits of yellow .
i ll talk to you on msn soon and i hope this helps

Hi Shaun. Thanks for the help. None of my books say anything about t. marginata. Would you belive me if I say I have a Testudo hermanni with just one supracaudal plate ? I do. Weird, huh ? And the tortoise I belieived was Testudo hermanni botgeri is actualy Testudo marginata. Thanks again for the help. look forward to chatting with you again.

Hi Snake17,
I'm Fulvio from Italy and I breed in my garden Testudo Marginata.I have two adults males and two adult female and a lot of baby.
T. Marginata is the bigger and most beatiful of european's tortoises ( for my taste of course).
It's very easy to distinguish T. Marginata from T. Hermanni Hermanni or T. Hermanni Boettgeri because of its plastron. In T.Marginata the plastron is paintetd with black triangles for each scale( eccept for the upper toward the head). This triangle are directed with the vertices toward the tail of the tortoise, and the base toward the head.By this very simple observation is impossible to mistake T.Marginata from T.Hermanni.
If you have yet again some doubts, see this web site:
www.herp.it/indexjs.htm?SpeciesPages/TestuMargi.htm
Cheers,
Fulvio
