I'm fourteen. I got my first snake eight years ago, and now I'm up to about 35. I think I'm ready to get a monicled cobra. I know you might think I'm kinda young, but that aside do you think I'm ready for a hot?
Have a good one
Jason

I myself, would say start with somthing less toxic like a Copperhead. Im not gone say yes to this question because a cobra is a big step forword from keeping non-venomous species. In my vew i would start with somthing like a Copperhead that dosent have the high toxciaty of elapids. Just remember if you do deside to get a cobra always watch yourself round it. I hope you dont try for a cobra as your first hot thoe.......Good luck on choosing your first hot and please Jason, i do mean please be very, very careful what you choose to start with.........Again, GOOD luck..........Happy herping Wally

nope, you should not get any hot. regardless of how ready you are the fact that you are under age is too much of a risk to the hobby. if you or a friend were to get tagged by a hot you were keeping, the press would have a field day and our rights would be futher restricted. wait till you are 18. then get a copperhead, then cottommouth, then rattler, work your way to a corba. dont jump right in.

Well Jason,
I think that you really are not ready for anything like a cobra just yet. And, sadly, that doesn't have anything to do with how ready you think you are.
You may be the most knowledgeable person in your own area of the world. However, the fact remains that you can't even drive yourself to the hospital and sign for your own hospital bills. Your mom, dad, legal guardian, whatever, would have to do that for you.
Not only that, but if they got a cobra and you subsequently got bitten while cleaning its cage (because they really only got it for you) they could wind up losing custody of you to foster care for endangering a minor. For those of you naysayers who would jump up and say it can't happen in our society today, I suggest you go back and review the follow-up on recent bite reports. There are keepers who frequent this very site that gave up keeping venomous for a period because the Department of Social Services began investigating them for endangering their children by keeping venomous reptiles regardless of how safe their practices and cages were.
The fact is that you are too young, by our society's legal definitions, to particpate in life threatening activities such as keeping cobras.
Don't give up your interests and use this time to learn everything that you can in preparation for the day when you are legally ready. I am sure that no-one here would recommend that you keep anything illegally (and if I am wrong - those posts would magically disappear ;-)

HELL NO!!! Cobras are seriously dangerous, generally ill tempered and prone to escape, besides you are too young to legally own a venomous anyway. Start with somthing less dangerous like a WDB when you are old enough.

Jason: I am with most of the rest of the guys. Under NO circumstances should you even be considering a venomous snake at your age, let alone one as serious as a cobra. My recommendation is that you wait until just after you vote the first time.

Jason:
I echo everyone's opinnion that you are to young to get any Venomous Snake. Karl says it best, there are many consequences to a bite by a venomous snake at your age, not just the health related reasons. Keep with non-venomous, be a good student, and hone your handling skills.
Good Luck,
Al

Im not trying to be sarcastic, but there are people that have been working with cobras longer than we have both been alive and still slip up. Pit vipers are dangerous to own and that requires time to move up to that level, but anyone would agree that a cobra or any other elapid is a huge step up. I myself think that I can handle a cobra but Im not getting one. For one thing, laws forbid exotics in my state, and for two, Its not only my safety that Im worried about. Lets say that I accidentaly didnt close the cage one cold night and the cobra got out. And while searching for a warm place to stay it crawls in the bed with a friend or family member. If you roll over on it or it senses a threat it wont hesitate to strike. I know that thats a small chance but worse has happened to the best.

Get a copperhead or a rear fanged snake like a mangrove if you wanna move up to hots. I`m 17 and I have been keeping and handeling hots since I was 14 and nonvens since I was 12. I just got my first pit viper now, up untill now I only kept native viperinae. I still don`t think I`m ready to get a cobra. I saw what my pope`s viper can do to some one, if it doesn`t kill you it could leave you with a finger in minus. A cobra could ruin your whole life, it could leave you unable to move, breathe or feel anything forever, I think you know what that means. That`s a responsabilty that you can asume when you are on your own. Your parents wouln`t deserve that now. I hope you folow my advice, if you wish to continue to buy a hot herp now. Take care and keep safe. It`s legal here to keep venomous indiferent of age. It realy sucks over there, from this point of view.

At 14 you dont want to get a cobra. They are nasty and fast. I started keeping hots when I was about 18, but I had been working full time at a reptile import warehouse for a few years at that point. I also had a large number of snakes when I was young, inc a 200lb bermese. Wait until you have a place of your own as keeping hots at your parents house could land them in trouble.
