I have a Crotalus lepidus klauberi that I have kept for 2 years. In the last month he has begun opening his mouth often and for seemingly no reason. He has also been refusing food but his weight is fine and other than the mouth opening does not seem to have any problems. Does anybody know why he is doing this?

Have you gotten any other new snakes lately?

It could be a respiratory problem, but whats causing it could be a number of things.
Just opening his mouth alone, is one thing. So is refusing food (could be a result of shorter photoperiods causing the snake to go into dormancy), but the two things combined are a concern.

Boy...when I saw the "excessive mouth opening" title I thought you were talking about my wife!
My take on the situation is that it could be parasites, lung worms, or the garden intestional variety. Best to have it's stool checked by a Vet.
Good Luck,
Al

mouth breathing in snakes is somtimes a sign of serious pulmonary disease there are several ways to diagnose these problems , like al says your vet could try a stool check but there are other ways aswell.

for the mouth opening alone I would say a respertory problem. I worked with a burm that was doing that and I looked at it and its nostrols were completly pluged. we gave it a bath and its nose unpluged and then it was fine. the eating might be a hybernation thing but like the other guys said you might get the stool checked just in case.
good luck
Jason

I had the same problem with a young Black Tail and was told by a vet that it was repritory and to get Tetracycline Hydrochloride from the pet store. I used half a capsule to 3cups of water in a bowl for 3 weeks. It cleared right up. Some of the braver guys take a suringe, fill it to about 1 cc, stick it in the snakes mouth and squit; 2 times a day for 1 week.

I just thought that it could also be mouth rot. so if its mouth is turning kinda dark that would cover both problems your having with him.
