im going to tampa with my girlfreind this christmas, and im planning on spending the night near the everglades one night. ive been told the temp will be right and the mosquitos wont be bad. what would be a good city to stay in and go out looking for snakes, id love to see a diamondback in the wild, that is the one southern hot i have yet to see.i would ask about good spots to see gators but im pretty sure they are everywhere down there.

The only real town near the Everglades is Everglades City. There is only a few places to stay in town. It will probably be expensive since "season" starts in south Florida around Christmas time and all the tourists flood the area.
You won't have a problem finding gators. They are all over the place.
Check out the back roads about 4 miles North of Everglades City. There are some good ones. The mosquitos won't be bad but the herping won't be as good as the wet summer season. You should still find plenty but you'll have to look harder.
Good luck,
Robert

if you really want to find some herps; go to key biscayne, just east of miami. the introduced lizards from monitors to mexican igaunas are all over the place.

I would certainly agree with Key Biscayne. There are a lot of introduced species to check out there and they are easy to find. Basilisks, Ameivas, spiny-tailed and green iguanas, etc... But it is about 6 hours from Tampa.
I have only been to Homestead once and didn't herp there, but again it is far away. You might not want to go there if you only have a day. But Key Biscayne may certainly be worth it. I don't know about Homestead.
Everglades National Park is very protected. So is Big Cypress though. But there is less regulation in Big Cypress and more places to herp.
A place a little closer to Tampa for introduced iguanas is Gasparilla Island, near Sarasota. Go to Boca Grande beach and there are spiny-tailed iguanas all over. Though they are less active during the winter.

There is a dirt road off to the right. There is a sign on it that says some sort of "juvenile detention center"...or something like that I forget. Anyway, I stayed at the Hampton Inn in FL. City for a few weeks in March while working at Turkey Pt.
I was driving down Rt. 1 one morning, and found this dirt road. Drive until you come to the gate. Park the car and walk the roads. I saw a couple cottonmouths back there, a SOuthern ringneck snake, OOODLES of gators (the big ones scare the Tar out of you, and there were lots of babies there in March. I'd imagine you could find other snakes, but I only saw cottons and water snakes. It was a great find for me, as it was only 5min from the hotel. You can walk for miles back there.
Also, I'd cruise Card Sound road at night and Croc Lakes. Wildlife Refuge. A FFW officer pointed out an AMerican croc for me floating in Croc Lakes.

im mostly trying to find an edb and some pigs, i know there are probly better spots in georgia, but im gonna be in tampa, and everglades is just a couple hours away (so im told) and thats a place ive always wanted to go. maybe there are some national forests between tampa and the glades that could be good. also if anyone wants to meet up down that way and hunt with me that would be great.

A friend took me around there and showed me spots where he found an EDB....he floats around this site, so maybe he'll reply.
There are pygmies there too as I recall, but we didn't find any the day I was out....we did see an Indigo though.
