I live in southeast NC. Last night at about 7:30 I was driving to get ice cream and while driving through a fairly new neighborhood found a really nice corn sitting in the middle of the road. I got out and picked it up to move it out of the road (corns are ALL copperheads around here of course). It was 55 degrees outside and the road could not have been any warmer so I am wondering if the snakes around here are still in an active mode because I'd like to go hunting for some. Also when they go into hibernation where do they go? Can "dens" be found?

If the temp was warm that day, the road might have still been warm enouf for him to get a little heat. I have found corns hibernating in old buildings myself, if you can find any old buildings in your area that have been deserted for some years you mite get lucky and find some hibernating under old bords, holes in the foundation and so on. As fare as finding the corn on the road with the temp being 55, remember most colubrids that leave in the south would be in hibernation if the temp is below 60. So odds are you found a snake that was desterbed from its winter rest and it was able to find a so so warm place on the road, that is if the sun was shining that day. Hope this helps.......Happy herping Wally

I should have kept it. It was about 2' or better but skinnier than you would imagine, maybe 3/4" at most. Usually corns this length I find are ready for mice but this one would maybe eat a fuzzy. I'll look for it again today/tonight and if I find it (yeah right)I'll keep it and fatten it up/relocate it. It was a beutifull red/rust. Must have just shed.
