I have a feeling most of the snakes in my area are denned up for the winter. Are snake hibernation spots possible to find? I live in a very "snaky" area but need a lot of experience hunting them as I've come up empty each time I've gone.

It would be pretty hard to find a hibernaculum unless you find one as soon as they come out in early spring and then you can mark the spot for future herping. I know where a den site is but I dont see them in there in the winter. I think they are backed up in the rocks pretty far. I know alot of species hibernate together. At this spot in early spring I see black rat snakes,timber/canebrakes,copperheads,black racers, eastern milk snakes, in the same area.

A note of Caution: If youre overzealous and take alot or disturb alot of a population from a den then the snakes will leave. I dont know where they go but they leave. My friends and I found a perfect spot for copperheads up here, and they kept going back and taking alot of them and not turning rocks back over and rolling the rocks down the hill and suddenly I wasnt finding anymore copperheads at that place, and I clearly remember one time going up there and finding 5 copperheads in about 3 minutes. 2 under 1 rock,1 under another, and 2 under the next. But it is good to find a spot where timbers stay at because you can walk up there anytime and find them. This past summer I was finding the same pregnant female timber rattlesnake almost everyday.
