I heard the rattlers lay flat for one sex and up on the narrow side for the other sex. i've been watching for this and it appears some are 'up & down' while others are flat.
Is this true?

Dyana,
I have not found this to be true. The only tried and true method of determining the gender of a snake would be probing.---Now please don't misunderstand my reply as it was an answer not a reccomendation to go and probe the snake; as it is a very dangerous undertaking to say the least.----
Hope this helps.

Dyana, I know of only one way to determine the sex of Rattlesnakes and most other Snakes for that matter. The only way that is known to me is probing the animal. I know of some Species that the sex can be determined by color and other small and deferent markings. If a Rattlesnake can be sexed by looking at the angle of the rattle, that would be a new find that I have not heard of yet. This has peaked my curiosity. I think I will do a little research on this subject.......Be safe, happy herping, Wally

You should be able to determine the sex of your rattlesnakes with a certain degree of accuracy by just a visual examination of the tail. The tail of the male is longer and thicker. Females have a rather marked narrowing at the vent. Maybe not as accurate as probing, but this method has not let me down yet on any of my Rattlesnakes.
