Hey Christopher, welcome to SHHS, if I was going to suggest some Non-Venomous Species to start with, I would say Rat Snakes, Black Racers, if you are an advanced Non-Venomous keeper, Emerald Tree Boas could help, any high strung and aggressive Non-Venomous Species would probably help. I would like to stress one thing tho, if you do start this way, don’t think it will fully prepare you to keep and handle Venomous Snakes. Remember when a Venomous Snake bites you it don’t just bring blood, it also brings a Hospital Bill that is out of this world (example $60,000 just because you got bit). My best advice to anyone wanting to learn how to keep and handle Venomous, is to find someone that can teach you the ropes. If you do plane to take the rout of using Non-Venomous to learn from, please, remember what I have told you. When you do get ready to obtain your first Hot, try to go with something like a Copperhead or Cottonmouth. If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask away, again, welcome to SHHS, hope you enjoy the site.........Be safe, happy herping, Wally

HEY CHRIS, WELL I WOULD START OUT WITH ANY ARBOREAL (TREE DWELLING) SNAKE. TREE BOAS, COASTAL CARPET PYTHONS ARE PRETTY SNAPPY GUYS. ALSO WATER SNAKES ARE AGGRESSIVE. THIS IS JUST FROM MY PERSONNAL EXPERIENCE. I KNOW THERE ARE PEOPLE IN HERE THAT OFFER OTHER CHOICES OF SNAKES, BUT THIS IS JUST MY EXPERIENCE. HOPE THIS HELPS. BRYAN

A coachwhip is the meanest nonvenomous I've ever delt with.I find them all the time on my property and catch them just to see if I can without getting tagged.I also let my daughter practice with them. Marty

Marty, I agree, I have caught a few Eastern Coachwhips in the past 2-3 years and every one of them had one aggressive temper. They seem to have this habit of catching you off guard and nailing you. If I have to say so myself, the Coachwhip is one aggressive little Snake........Be safe, Wally
