I know this may be a little off the subject, but are there any kinds of rules and regulations that certain churches have to follow to allow venomous snakes in there sermons?? Espically a southern state where venomous snakes are illegal? If it is for a church purpose, can they still be kept? I know this maybe a gray area, but I am just curious if anyone knows. Thanks alot.... Bryan

I believe snake handling churches are only legal in 2 states, West Virginia and Georgia. I don't think the laws in those 2 states are very strict when it comes to venomous snakes, so i would say there is no problem.
I could be wrong though. chris

I don’t know the laws of WV, but I will find out. I am visiting the serpent handling church in Jolo, WV this weekend. The practice is not illegal in GA, in fact quite the opposite is true. When the state outlawed the keeping of venomous snakes, concessions were made for native venomous so the churches could practice. The practice is outlawed in TN in a round about way. Its not illegal to use the snakes in church, its just illegal to house them or transport them. Not everyone in a serpent handling church takes up the serpents. Just like everywhere else, most are afraid. In the churches I have been in thus far, there is a designated handling area. The serpents are kept in the boxes till someone feels lead to take one up. Then they may only do so in that area. The Rock House Church on Sand Mtn has a white line drown on the floor. If one goes past that line with a loose serpent, the pastor will rebuke them and put them back in the area. No one under 18 is allowed to take part in the practice and no children are allowed in the handling area. Hope that answers your question. Email me if you want to know something specific or if you would like to attend one. The SEHS’s own Bro Silas Crawford will be reopening the Old Straight Creek Serpent handling church this month. Look forward to seeing how it develops. This church is over 100 years old. George W Hensley himself handled there. Its been shut down for sometime, till the owner found Silas.

Well, that is an interesting question. I have been to more services then I have been able to keep track of. Probably been in the church services maybe 20 times. But anytime you are with a serpent handler or a group of serpent handlers, they are liable to break them out. I have seen them handle on the side of the road, front yard, my snake lab, their houses, motel rooms, the list goes on and on. I put up an interesting picture of Silas “taking up” a puff adder in our motel room in south FL about a month ago. Anyone that is interested can check him out at http://www.ssnakess.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=62288

I am a photojournalism student at WKU, and want to do a story on snake handling churches. I need to find as many in and around southwestern KY as I can. If anyone can help me find a church, or get into contact with a member or minister of one of these churches, I would greatly appreciate it. My interest is pure here, not to give bad publicity, or even any at all. I just want to do a story for my class, and hopefully for my portfolio. I need all the help I can get, because this is somewhat of an elusive topic. Please let me know.
Thanks,
Travis

Hi, I just read a post from 2005 about you attending a snake handling church. I have wanted to attend the church in Jolo, WV but have got all sorts of conflicting information. I spoke to a woman from Welch, WV and she said they closed and then another said the services are 12. Another said Sunday nights at 7 and I just can't find any more info. I am about 2 hours away and do not want to go on a wild goose chase. If you have any information concerning the church I would appreciate it so much. I am in Summersville, WV. Do you know of any perhaps closer? Thank you. :)
