Hi
I read an article once that snakes did once occur in new zealand about 15-20 million years ago during the miocene epoch. The site they found these fossils have been kept a secret because freshwater deposits survived only in isoltaed pockets and the site is a rare occurance . This was back in the miocene epoch and new studies might show the reason theirs no venomous snakes there now and when exactly they disapperd.
Anyway hope this helps.
