In the years that Ive worked with copperheads, I believe that a copperhead becomes more defensive at night than in the daytime. Most of the copperheads that Ive found in the daytime are easy going and dont really want to strike, but when I find them at night it is a completely different story. I finally got a chance to test this with a wild copperhead Ive been seeing everyday for the past two weeks. I found it this morning out sunning and when I approached, it was still. With the help of a stick I picked it up and it still showed no sign off aggression until further provoked, I found the same snake tonight when the sun went down at around 7 pm. I approached and it immediatly backed away. I used the stick to pick it up and it struck several times. Ive seen the same thing every summer when catching copperheads. The ones I catch in the day are not as aggressive but when I find them at night, they all become defensive. Just a thought(Not saying anyone can pick up a copperhead in the daytime and not get bit.)

They are always more active at night, breeding feeding etc. My animals stay pretty much hidden in the daylight (I have very naturalistic terrarium setups) but come 8 at night they are out and about. On the other hand if you have ever flipped tin on one early in the morning you will find they can be just as nasty early morning as they are in late evening. Also, if I was walking through the woods at night, and suddenly a giant craft appeared blinding me with super sized halogen bulbs I might be inclinded to bite them as well.

Yeah, its probably because they are more active at night. I do find alot of my copperheads in the morning some are bad and some arent. But when I found the last one at night I used an L.E.D. light.
