These laws are the result of the reckless few. The majority of the keepers that I know are responsible people. Of course accidents happen however. Sad to say, but the deaths that we have read about here seem to have been due to the fact that bitten persons did not show up at the ER with a bite protocol and the proper antivenoms IN HAND. This caused a critical delay in proper treatment of the bite, leading to the death of the individual. The more prepared and educated that we appear to be, the less likely we are to have our priveleges revoked. If you don't believe me, just look around. It's happening everywhere. And yes, lawmakers in other states use those types of headlines to build their cases. Can't you just hear the legislators saying, "Let's take action BEFORE this becomes a problem in OUR state"?

Bravo Chris!! Well Said!
Talking with many keepers & breeders about the need of a National "Unbrella" to unite our hobby, so as to be more effective in combating legislation. Subsequently, I'm forming a group to start the ball rolling with the goal. Sort of like: "National Association of Venomous Reptile Keepers." This is just possible name, so if somebody has another one join the group. The SOLE purpose is to fund lobbying of lawmakers to go with a permit system rather than a total ban. In other words protecting our rights. It will be just a "banner" that we ALL can unite under. The A/V Banks will be a cornerstone to this end. If there is anyone interested contact me by email.
Chris, Karl, & all other SHHS officers; Please join in for your experience, wisdom & leadership will be invaluable to the success of the organization. I know all of us are severely "time limited" but that's why it's important to have as many of us in the steering/formation group as possible.
Okay..I can here the critics but I would rather go down standing than on my knees. It may be too little, too late but doing nothing is not an option!
Sincerely,
Al Coritz

Just another note about the KY law:
The first draft we received indicated that native venomous would be included in the ban. However, now that has been changed. Native venomous may still be kept under the same laws as were put into place last year (for all natives). However, you still need permission from your county to get a transportation permit if you purchase it out of state. Several counties have recently outlawed all dangerous animals so check with yours if this applies to you.

Ok, glad you clarified. That was the info I was getting from everyone else, but I figured you would be more in the know then anyone else. Makes much more sense now.
