How well do you get along with your DNR

Here's a topic that can help every state. If you are doing the lawful thing and keeping your snakes in a humane and safe manner and your state doesn't have a permit system, invite one of your DNR guys over to show them "how it's supposed to be done".
The Department of Natural Resources can be a very beneficial ally, when it comes to protecting your hobby. These guys only worry about the local native species, however, can get in touch with local animal control people as well as federal. They can take your ideas to the powers that be and push to install a permit system. I just had a call from my DNR guy last night. He liked the way my safe room was set up, along with the signage I have posted.
I told him about he exotic gabby's I have, and the A/V for them. My other hots all run off of CroFab, thus no A/V is stored for them. He was amazed to say the least. He told me of other keepers and how things tend to disappear, then remarked on how nothing could get out of my room. My girlfriend even remarked to him how I handle them. His visit, he claimed, was one of his best visits to a venomous keeper ever. He said he’d use my methods, as a template of how to look for things that shouldn't be.
To wrap up, DNR can be a great aid to you, or a bad experience. All in all, if you're doing the lawful thing, you have nothing to fear, and these guys will listen and go back to their superiors and tell your story. I feel that my visit with him last night just helped to further the hobby in my state. I have no worries about someone going to Annapolis and trying to take away something that the state claims I'm doing a good job at. However, it's those who aren't lawful who can make that last statement completely obtuse.
Tell me how you interact with your local authorities.

I DO NOT interact with any wildlife officials. I am an active member here. The state I live in has a ban on all venomous reptiles. So, i stay clear.

I get along great with my local DNR. I run snake calls for them, give them free classes on handling and snakebite, and even supply them with equipment. They know me and they trust me. How you present yourself to local officials is VERY important. It does 2 things: a. it establishes your credibility and b. it shows them that you respect their authority. Disrespecting them won't get you anywhere. If you cross their path in the wrong light, they will always win.

I get along very well with the NYS DEC. THey are not the villains when it comes to legislation, its uneducated politicians, who are worried about getting re-elected.
Ditto to what Chris said. If you do not establish a relationship with them DNRs, and show them you are sincere in your intent and abilities to keep venomous animals, you will never earn any respect. If you feel they are the enemy, well, then most likely you are are naive and disillusioned, and really are not fit to maintain wildlife of ANY kind.

I'm glad to see your interaction is on that level Chris, this will no doubt usher in a well established bond with those who can and often do offer up ideas to their superiors who then put things on their "to do" lists.
Well said.
