Hello everyone -
A couple of months ago, I asked if anyone knew if Wyeth was still making the poylvalent AV since it looks like CroFab is the go-to A/V these days. Long story short, I finally called Wyeth directly today and talked to a rep. He assured me that they are still producing the polyvalent A/V in sufficient quantities to keep the availability high.
Good news for all of us.

Not to my knowledge they are. I do know that you can still get it at some hospitals but mostly used for last resort. Crofab has pretty much takin over. Also there is a AV called bio something that has came out of Mexico that covers all species in the North and South America.

They are. I called them directly yesterday at 3:46pm and was told that production only slowed down after the introduction of CrFab. So Wyeth Crotalidae Polyvalent is still available.

Hi:
Your information is only partially correct. See this email I received from Wyeth Customer Service today. IF it was available I would stock it for the Antivenom Bank. This is not what I call easily available for emergency use. If it was in production it would not be on such a short leash by Wyeth.

Dear Mr. Coritz,
Thank you for your e-mail.
We now have stock on Antivenin Coral Snake (00008-40703) and Polyvalent (00008-33204). All product will be on reserve to be released for emergency situations only. At this time we will not be accepting Advanced or Backorders.
Antivenin will ship overnight but will not ship over a weekend, therefore Friday orders will ship Monday for Tuesday delivery
A maximum of 5 are allowed for restocking accounts that have exhausted stock treating current patients.
I hope this answers your question. Again, thank you for your e-mail.

Ah ha. Well I stand partially corrected then. The guy I talked to yesterday assured me that they were in full production. I guess their definition of "full production" is different than most peoples.
Thanks for the info Al. Part of me knew it was too good to be true... I guess that just means more benadryl and Solu-medrol for me then...

Here's what I think happened. At first, they pretty much figured they wouldn't be able to compete with CroFab, but then all of the data about CroFab's short half-life and lack of ability to treat severe cases surfaced. [Overall, it works, but it would be better without the issues that it does have.] So, Wyeth hasn't totally killed the project, but then again, it's not in full swing either. Especially because Bioclon's Antivipmyn is on the horizon. It's a Fab2 product, and has already been tested head-to-head with CroFab. In most areas, it performed better.
The biggest question that I have is, why doesn't someone have the foresight to include helleri in the production of a rattlesnake antivenom!?! All antivenoms produced seem to lack the components necessary to really hit that nail on the head.

Hi chris
Dr Sean Bush has done a study on the effectiveness of CroFab in treating C. helleri bites. The conclusion is that its just as affective during the first 6hrs of envenomation as in any other bite, after which progressive swelling can return due to free Fab fragments clear faster than venom componenets.I can send you the pdf, if you wish. He also says "CroFab is
generally more effective than Wyeth's Antivenin Crotalidae Polyvalent.(pers comms)

Somebody please clear up the rumor that I heard stating Wyeth showed better performance for copperhead bites......it might have been just a rumor.
Anybody got any concrete evidence?

Hi:
Yes, I have a medical publication (trial) that tracks 8 copperhead envenomations and treatment with CroFab. As it turns out it did not work very well against Copperhead envenomation. Also personal conversations with several "Venom Doc's" at the Biology of Rattlesnakes symposium.
When I get back home I'l dig it out.

But isn't the point of Cro-fab to be able to treat severe envenomations? I liken Cro-fab for a copperhead bite as getting Chemotherapy for a headache....whats the point???
