I was just browsing thru ebay when I came across these interesting original prints dated 1849. The rattlesnake appears to be C.horridus but is listed as durissus. Was that indeed the scientific name designated for the Timber Rattlesnake in the mid-1800's. Anyways, nicely detailed prints worth checking out. Type in item number 7306857937 into the search window and it should bring it up.

I do not think it was the name back then. I have several plates like that from a German book of Reptiles,Amphibians, and Fish that are from mid 19th centurary, and they clasify Crotalus horridus as the name the Timber Rattlesnake.
