I think alot of it has to do with the state you live in as well. I know where I live, all of the snakes I buy are from expos and private dealers. For example, the pet store in my area is unbeliveable on snake prices. Here are some examples: baby burms 169.00, baby boas 189.00, jungle carpet baby 198.00, baby bloods almost 300.00, baby anacondas 170.00 baby caimens for 389.00, it is just crazy. But, he stays in business because people dont know the real value on these animals. Bryan

Gotta love those pet shop prices. Shriveled leos with tank and access. for only $159!! lol geez.
I agree with many of the above posters. Prices on especially dangerous or especially threatened animals should remain high. Of course, you can't really do any price fixing, as that is illegal in this capitalist society, but it's a real shame when you can go out and buy a baby spitting cobra for $30-50 - and not just any spitting cobra, but the largest and one of the most difficult to handle ones at that (talking of course about N. nigricollis).

I would have to say that the prices are too low as well. People always don't mind paying several hundred dollars (or more) for a snake and then place it in a $50 enclosure. I think that if someone is going to take on the responsibility of owning a pet herp, they should be prepared to invest a lot of money in its wellfare (terrarium, food, lights, etc...), and people that can only spend a couple hundred dollars will be unable to do so. If it is really about the love of the animals then each animal should be well taken care of with appropriate enclosures and food. Sadly, I have rarely seen it work that way.
Just my thoughts,
Robert
