Hi, My name is Doug Stienstra and I am 13 years old. I want to get a venomous snake, but I need a lot more experience. I want to find someone that can help get experience with venomous snakes. I live in Orange City Iowa, about 45 minutes from Sioux City IA and an hour and a half from Sioux Falls SD. Is there anyone that lives around me that can help me. Please email me at d_stienstra@hotmail.com.
Thank you

Good evening Doug,
13, eh...The short answer is that no, you would not likely find anyone that would be willing to help you out, at least at 13. What you will likely find is that if you ask lots of questions at places like the SHHS and the kingsnake.com forums, you will be able to tap into the brains of collective centuries worth of knowlege, experience and opinions on herpetology in general and venomous snakes in particular.
If you don't already have them, I recomend that you get yourelf a few general subject books: The Encyclopedia of Snakes by Chris Mattison is a decent book. Snakes: The Evolution of Mystery in Nature by Dr Harry Greene is an excellent book as well.
My advice to you is to read and ask lots of questions. Get as much experience with as many snakes as you can. In a few years, you might offer you services as a "slave" at a zoo with a decent herpetological collection. THis is a great wa to gain expernece and they may even allow you to scoop come cobra poop.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Roger

I agree with Roger wholeheartedly. Read as much as you can and talk to these guys on the forums. It never ceases to amaze me that I can ask a question on this forum or at kingsnake.com and get replys from guys like Bryan Grieg Fry or Wolfgang Wuster, and Roger. He has always answered my questions in a polite, informative manner, and its obvious he knows his snakes. I would suggest for now you might want to find the meanest non-venomous snakes that you can and work with them for a couple of years. Book learning is great, but nothing beats that hands on experience.
Don't give up though, you'll get there.
Marc

Hi Doug ,
They're absolutely right.I was in your shoes once.
My advise to you is buy some good guide books to
help you with your identification . And read, read, read, and start asking question. Then go out into the field for non-venomous snakes. I was 12 when I got
into herps. Now I'm 30 with over ten years of experience. Think hard about hot herps one mistake can be your last. Be careful and be safe . Hope this helps you out some, best of luck.
Cheers :) Andy V

I cheked up at coastalreptiles.com and in Iowa, you need permits for the native protected venomous only. My advice to you is that you ought to get a coachwhip and keep that for a few years.
Just remember: ask questions, read, and mainly have some fun.
Cheers
Roger
PS: Pardon the typos, I just got off of work.
