The Journalist wrote me back too. All she had to go on was the crap F&W gave her. I think she will "fix" the story today.
And I was beginning to think there were no journalists that strived for accuracy anymore.

Strange the distinction that they put on Venomous and not Dangerous, huu? If you want to own a Hognose here they have no problem, but my lord, bring a FWC here and they will have a darn Cow. This is the problem with stupid politicians making Laws “they know nothing about the Animals” they think that just because the Animals has the name Cobra in it, it is going to be Dangerous. This is the true ignorance of our Government, huu? I talked to T.D. Roberts today and he is going to fight this thing to the end, he said that he is tired of Officials thinking they can just make your mind up for you. He said that the Snake was not in the best of shape when he got it and that he wanted to nurse it back to health. In my way of viewing this, he did nothing rong, as a matter of fact, if I found a Snake is someone’s collection, that was in bad shape. I would care for it to, wouldn’t you? In my mind it’s the only right thing to do....................Be safe ya’ll, happy herping Wally

The way the law is written here in Alabama is "any non-indigenous venomous reptile" is illegal to possess, sell, breed, and purchase.
I talked to someone in law enforcement in the dept of conservation and fisheries and asked him about non-indigenous subspecies (like a broad-banded copperhead) I got the impression he didn't know what a subspecies was because he said "You can't keep all rattlesnakes here" After trying to explain what a subspecies was he said "Look, if it don't live here, you can't keep it." (note proper English) The law came about after about 5 years ago when some guy had a cobra get loose that he kept in a cardboard box in North Alabama (ALA_herp31, do you remember that?) Well everyone in the state freaked out, locked thier children up and cobras were sighted all over the state. Needless to say, the law was passed rather quickly.
I honestly feel the law enforcement branch here really doesn't really know that much about snakes. For those that don't life in Alabama, you have to understand, the majority of the people involved in outdoors, conservation and wildlife either hunt or fish.

Hey Sal, nice hearing from you again. I do remember that Cobra that got lose in Moody, AL “I think it was”. After all the trouble with that situation, it surprises me that they didn’t Ban all Venomous Keeping out right. If I recall correctly the Snake that got lose was a (Naja haje) Egyptian Cobra. It is funny how one Snake gets lose from some Hicks collection, and all Exotic Venomous are Banned. I remember you telling me about talking to the Wild Life Official about Subspecies, its funny how they will pass the Laws to please the Public, yet they don’t bother learning about the Animals, so they can make the Law clearer. Strange huu? I think it all comes down to pleasing Mr. and Miss. J/Q voter. I don’t think it is intended to protect crape myself. If they bothered to do a little research they mite find out that better ways of controlling the Bad Apples in our Hobby can be implemented. Take care Sal, keep in touch................Be safe Wally

the kid that triggered the herp laws here in alabama lost his cobra and mamba......he was 14 i believe (great parenting there).......i've also found the other animal laws interesting....raccoons are illegal to own, but african lions are not.....bobcats are illegal to own yet 100lb siberian lynxes are not......grizzly bears are fine but black bears are a no-no
i had a run in with the fish and game dept......i was keeping a couple of canebrakes, 2 southern copperheads and an eastern diamondback......someone (i'm 99.9% sure he was a particular member here, since the guy got mad at me and actually said he'd 'tip' off the feds that i was keeping illegal snakes) had them check me out....well, i was 100% legal by state, county and city laws and they could do nothing but tell me how dangerous these snakes were......i asked him what he thought about horses, since they kill more people each year than snakes and dogs combined.......didn't have an audible reply, just mumbling.....said they'd be watching me and i told them i'd leave the blinds open and walk around naked if they were into that sort of thing.......
they don't have anything better to do....they came to my house ready to bust me.....just couldn't do a thing but upset my animals.......it's said that they'll act on some moron's impulsive false statement like that.....
