I live in the Tampa, FL area and I am newcomer to road cruising- and was hoping to get some advice. I am almost always alone (btw: if you live in the area and would like to pair-up one night, please drop me a line). Anyways, I was North of Tampa tonight cruising a paved road in a pine forest area when at 9:30 I spotted my #1 target for the night, a large coral snake, in the road. I was prepared (or so I thought) for an active and large snake- but I was aghast at the size and speed of this one. I left the car without my camera (mistake 1) and had the snake in the middle of the road where it ignored the end of my snake hook. I must have looked like a goofball. Bottom line, I watched helplessly as the snake went off into the woods before the "photo shoot." My question is, can anyone reccomend a technique to photograph a large/ active coral without me touching the thing with my bare hands- which will never happen! Will a temporary roadside detention under some type of artificial cover calm it down? Thanks for the help. I will redeem myself!

take a nice sized box or something.....throw it on for a second and then pull and shoot.....or just be sneakier....they always lay there when i see them out.....that's why everyone runs them over i suppose.....

I have caught & maintained long term corals and can tell you that they cannot be controlled with just a hook. If you intend to catch one, you're gonna have to use your hand in combination with the hook. Fizzbob's idea is a good one. Instead of a box try a 5 gallon bucket.

One other mistake to avoid: Don't forget to put your car in PARK!! My rental car almost ended up in the swamp...talk about looking goofy! "Hey Mister, your car is driving away!"
Good Luck,
Al

Soft footfalls help too. If you run up to snake and your feet are pounding on the pavement, it's gonna know you're coming, panic and streak outta there like no ones business. I usually put my heel down and try to roll the rest of my foot down trying not to smack my toes down either, rather than flatfooting it. It's a lot easier to show it than explaining it in writing. Ever try to explain to someone how to write the letter M without being able to show them how it goes?

Al, thank god for a Strait Shift Transmission, just pop it out of Gear and your ready to chase “LOL”. Now, having a Strait shift still don’t make it safe. I have parked on a hill and forgot to pull the Emergency Break up and the Car starts rolling backwards. This is a true Americas Funniest Home Videos winner, seeing a Herper, with Snake Hook, Tongs and Bucket in hand, chasing a car down the hill. Just makes the old funny bone fill warm inside huuu? “LOL”.......... Be safe ya’ll and don’t forget to pull the Break up when you get out of your Car. Happy herping Wally

Get a clear plasitc tube. Make sure the back end is closed with only the front open. When you see the coral snake, set the tube down in front of it and coax it in.
