I have handled many venomous snakes out in the field (mainly copperheads), but in NC it is illegal to keep venomous pets. Is there a certain kind of permit or license I can get so that I can keep them?

it is legal to have venomous snakes as of now, that may change soon. the only venomous that cant be owned here are timber rattlesnakes, carolina pigmy rattlesnakes, eastern diamondbacks, and eastern coral snakes.

Yea, if you go out looking for snakes, the only venomous you can keep are the copperheads. Check your county info via their website if they have one on venomous keeping in general or special animal permits.

In NC you may keep Agkistrodon piscivorous and conanti. The other indigenous venomous require permits issued by NC DENR. It is permit only because these animals are "species of special" concern; not because they are venomous. Exotic venomous are not regulated at this time. I sit on a panel advising the NC Senate on animal legislation; specifically reptile legislation.

Oh yea, I forgot about AC Piscivorous because as many times as I've been hunting out in NC, I've only come across one.

I've been on the look out for timber rattlers in rocky point, not far from my place. Everysince I was 11 or so Ive been out catching venomous like copperheads and cottonmouths, but lately Ive been thinking of keeping one. I really dont want to just up and take one randomly from the wild because of the downhill numbers of the eastern diamondbacks, especially in around rocky point. Though I've came over some chances to get them out of shotgun range from my uncle, I just dont want to keep one illegally.
Does anyone know how I could get a permit?
