Pretty much any way you choose to measure it, the mambas all come out on top, with polylepis leading the pack. Bear in mind, however, that being hit by a pickup truck does not make you any less dead than being hit by a train. There are several North & South American rattlesnakes that have the potential for fatal bites even with proper treatment.

Untreated, mambas have a much higher mortality rate than rattlesnakes. Prior to antivenom, the Eastern diamondback had a 25% mortality rate; the Black mamba 100%.

Like the man said " dead is dead" of the two I would much rather be tagged by a rattlesnake. The pain is almost untolerable but you have time on your side to recieve anti-venom with a rattlesnake at least in most cases but with a mamba (black) you have about one hour or less. A rattlesnake usually hits once but a mamba has the reputation of delivering neumerous bites. Add to that, that a mamba is teratorial and defends his space, and can reach a leingth of twelve feet, well as I said I would rether be hit by the Rattler.
Truly yours

Both if you are allergic to the bite as some people are to wasp stings :) Just something to keep in mind :)

WITH antivenom, the bite is going to cause much less lasting harm. Get a pressure wrap on the bite and get antivenom properly, and you'll walk away from it. With a crotalid, there's going to be some nasty scarring and possible loss of function no matter how good the care.
