Every year, I purchase a bound notebook and start keeping a Herp Journal for that year. It costs about $1.00 for the journal and a good ink pen.
I keep records of behavior I observe on the reptiles I keep, and I keep detailed field notes of reptiles and amphibians I find during the year. I record road kills, and animals I find, and record the temperature, and weather conditions, and time of day, the location, and anything else that might be of interest.
Just today I am going through journals I kept back in 1972, 1973, and 1974. Even though these were written 30 years ago, I can still know what I found on what roads, and at what time and wether conditions. And if I go back collecting to those areas, some of them will still be good areas, just like they were in the past.
For instance, they list a great dusky pygmy rattlesnake location, and one for scarlett kings. Those areas are as good today as they were thirty years ago.
I would suggest that all you young herpers start keeping a journal, and recording what you find, and when, and the conditons. You would be amazed in looking back on just how usefull that information might just be. Best Regards JohnZ

That's great advice John, and GPS would help along those lines in a big way. As a hunter/trapper I use this tech. as well, but tend to look back and realize my nice areas are gone to development. The further North I go, so be it. TF
