The surest method is by probing, which is not recommended for any but the most advanced handlers with the proper tools, including not only the right sized probe, but hook & tube as well. If you lack the skills & the equipment, look closely at the tail. It will be easier if you have more than one snake. The tail of the male will be a little thicker at the base. This is due to the fact that his sex organs are in the tail, thereby making it thicker than that of the female.

Randy: I notice that you have these Southern Copperheads listed in the Classifieds section of this site. If you do not want to let them go near your house, why not drive out into the country and release them in some wooded / rocky area? That way they could help play out their role in nature, and still not be a danger to your children. JohnZ

I would recommend doing a little Reckon of the area you plane on releasing in. In some cases, it is not a good idea to relocate a Snake in a certain area. The population in some areas already has the amount it needs to Keep the Ecology in balance. This is just a suggestion that mite help keep you native population from coming into trouble ......................Be safe ya’ll, happy herping Wally

on the probing. our family raised emus groing up, at one point we had around 150. sexing a bird is done buy probing with the fingers. I understand that the probe of apropriate size sould be used. I am guessing that by scales you mean how far the probe goes without obsrtuction. are there two holes in the anal area? and can you discribe this procedure in detail?
