i really suck at finding snakes.....tonight i went out to blackwell swamp near the airport in madison county (not catching anything to keep) and found a monster beaver, a wolf spider that was over 6" in diameter, some spotted gar that were over 4ft long (big), frogs and possums, etc, even an owl, but not one single snake.....it was around 9pm.......i found a shed skin, but no snakes.....cruised the roads, looked in the swamps, etc.......but nothing.......i always look around fallen trees, under anything that could be cover, etc.....but i've found 1 copperhead and that was in a residential neighborhood in someone's front yard......and they kinda found it and called me.....
i'd love to find some venomous snakes, and would like to keep it somewhere in the sand mountain to lauderdale county area (basically all of the northern counties) but i just really suck at finding snakes when i'm looking for them.......what are some tips for this time of year and others....any really good spots i'm missing......i'd rather find some hots, since i've only found the one snake that was alive......i'm not sure what i'd do if i found a rattler in the wild.....probably freak out with excitement....i'm sure the day will come eventually, but expediting the whole thing wouldn't be so bad

As for me, the best advice I can give for this time of the year, is to wait until 2-3 AM and hit the Roads. I have noticed that most of our Natives become very Nocturnal when the Temps rise above 90. I have caught so many Cottonmouth in the wee hours of the morning lately “it isn’t even funny how many I’ve seen”. As for looking around Blackwell Swamp, you are correct, this area holds a good Population of Cottonmouth and I have also seen Pygmy Rattler in that area and other areas also. Some other places to try are, Beaver Dam Swamp, Wheeler Refuge Gravel Pits, Swan Creek Management Area, and a lot of other Swamps that can be found around Limestone Co.. If you are really wanting to find good Venomous Spots, try walking deep into some of our Swamps at between 3 AM and Sunrise, make sure you have a good bright flashlight “as for myself I would rather use Head Lamps” they give you a better vew of the Land around. Good luck, hope you get the Mother Load ................Be safe ya’ll, happy herping Wally
