Both of the last two nights that i've been out herping there has been a snake in the street that just got ran over by a car minutes earlier, basically cut in half with half their insides hanging out but still alive and trying to move even though they can't. Both times i've thought of what the right thing to do is..put it out of its misery or leave it be, and both times i've left them alone even though last night the one was already being eaten by ants while still alive. My question is what do you think is the right thing to do, I love snakes and have never killed one before for any reason but can't help but feel that it isn't right to leave them there struggling?

Think of what is best for the snake, end it`s misery. I say that and I hope I don`t ever have the misfortune of seeing one in that condition. I am sorry you had to find them in that state.
Best regards,

If you happen to be close to home ? freezing is always the best way to euthanase a fataly damaged snake but if this is not an option dont mess abouot looking and proding call the shot and do what has to be done. Atleast for to end the snake suffering hope this is of some help , rather than kill it with a brick say try to get it somewhere where it can be killed/put to sleep but if unneccasary suffering will be caused then put it out of its misery remember obviously dead or dying hots are still JUST as venomous im sure you already know this, kieron.

^^definitely I know not to mess around with a dead or dying venomous, both of the ones i've seen the last two days have been Diamondback Watersnakes (Nerodia R. Rhombifer) about two miles from my house. The one last night was very young, probably less than a week old, usually I see frogs and toads like this on rainy nights but for some reason it's been a bad weekend for the snakes around here.

Actually freezing can be quite a painful death, even for a snake. When cells freeze, the cytoplasm (fluid in the cells) expands, rupturing the cells. This results on the macro scale in frostbite. Pretty painful to humans, and pretty painful to snakes.
If you find a snake mortally injured on the road, but still alive, the best thing to do is to swiftly and completely crush it's head, destroying it's brain. Seems cruel, yes, and believe me, it's incredibly hard for a snake lover to do, but the only way to instantly kill it is to destroy the brain. Snakes have incredibly low oxygen requirements, so even cutting off the snakes head can result in the animal still being very much alive and in pain for up to an hour. Again, the only way to end the pain is to completely destroy the brain. Sorry for the morbid rhyme. Other's here may disagree, but I have found this to be the quickest, and theoretically least painful method to euthanize them in the field, unless you are carrying syringes loaded with gamma-hydroxybutramide and chloroquine, which I believe is what vets use to put animals down.
