here are the top ten urban parks to herp in areas that i have been to more than once.
10. sandusky parks and rec, sandusky, OH
herps seen-lake erie water, northern water, queen snake, smooth green, butlers' garter, spotted turtles, eastern fox snake, blue racer, fossil remains of timber rattlesnakes at marblehead quarry.
9. Cincinatti Metro Parks; northern fence lizard, italian wall lizard, western smooth green, rough green, eastern hognose, black ratsnake, eastern milksnake, eastern massassuga, northern copperhead(most frequent snake i have seen in backyards bordering the little miami river bluffs area)
8. Gahanna Parks and Rec; never have seen so many water snakes, garter snakes, and black ratsnakes in one acre of Creekside park than in all of my research.
7. Washington DC metro area parks; rocky creek park may be polluted but i saw huge king snakes and impressive black ratsnakes here...an occasional corn and red-bellied watersnakes make this area unique in the non-venomous kind. you better venture to big meadows state park to see the closest timbers to our nations capital which should harbor small relict pops..as the same as bostons blue hills region.
6. Louisville parks and rec: west parks have prarie kingsnakes, greyphased ratsnakes, southern black racers, timbers, cottons, and coppers; eastern louisville is in blue grass area which is devoid of timbers and cottons but coppers are very common
5. Wilmington parks and rec, nC; in some of the little parks in and around this southern nc border you must check out battleship nc...eventhough a tourist attraction the area is crawlin with snakes..cottons, waters, greens, and large kingsnakes with necks as large around as my fists.
4. Pittsburg is way up there in urban herps; i have seen all of pitts hots in its many suburban park and mountains; near 84, pa i spotted the largest black timber i have seen to date...atleast 5 foot 2 inches from head to tip of rattle. Also found a sawdust pile with 10 copperheads...mostly yellow-tailed neonates along with a couple black racers, black ratsnakes, and tons of ringnecks
3. Columbia SC and Fort Jackson, SC: I have herped this area for over 2 years and have impressive results...working in the asp me and my battlebuddies have encountered large black ratsnakes, briliantly patterned southern hognose, fiesty cottons, and large pregnant canebrakes that like to go into the asp ammo bunkers to feed on large gophers and moles we had in the grassy areas inbetween the bunkers. Congaree Swamp is only 20 miles from ft. jackson and it is too date my most successful herping adventure to date.
2. myrtle beach sp, sc; my opinion the best non-venomous herping area from southern nc to northern charleston, sc; i have seen so many broad headed skinks here..fatty ones, and eastern glass lizards in all of my herping adventures. in fall 2004 i located four southern black racers in about 30 minutes and a couple cottons on the bank of this small heavily vegetated swampy pond. Large yellow ratsnakes also prevail in exposed dirt from new construction bordering the intercoastal waterway. i spotted a pair of yellow ratsnakes completlely stretched out to reveil a 7 foot frame inter-locking in a mating ball. impressive myrtlebeach both in hot babes and in sexy snakes.
1. Hilton head, sc; anywhere there is a small creek and a couple of large trees will harbor copperheads, cottons, and large black racers. 50 yards from a parkinglot at sea pines forest preserve i found herps everywhere...mega snapping turtles, large spiny softshell, and tire sized yellow-bellied sliders...all four coastal lizard species...glass, six-lined racerunner, anole, and three kinds of skinks here; non-venomous snakes: eastern garters, eastern ribbons, southern rignnecks, countless water snakes, isolated reports of diamondbacks in area but i havent seen one. many southern coppers, eastern cottons, and a couple of canebrakes are reported here. dusky pygmies are found in bluffton but not in hilton head. the most precious thing i saw was march 2005 an eastern king crawling over a sand dune 10 feet away from high tide. Awesome baby too bad i didn't have a camera...some situations are more momentous left to the pencil and paper or typewriter.
