When it comes to common names, you can basically pronounce them any way you want...within reason. For instance, what Jeremy said. Anoles are Anolis carolinensis. The word Anole obviously comes from the genus Anolis, but is a common name derivative of it. You can pronounce anole itself however you want to - I personally prefer "ah - nole", since in English we don't usually pronounce the silent e on the end. But the scientific name, Anolis, would specifically be pronounced "Ah-no-leess" to conform to the Latin pronunciation. To figure out most pronunciations, look at a list of Latin vowels and see how they are pronounced. From this, you can pronounce most scientific names, because consonants are almost always the same as English, or whatever your language is.

I got it. I was mildly disappointed at the size of it (I was expecting a massive tome), but once I opened it I was very impressed. Many Thanks.

There's a correct way to pronounce scientific names, it's not like it can be pronounced differently in every country (it would go against the idea of the scientific name that must be understood everywhere). By the way, the correct pronounciation of Agkistrodon is AN-kis-tro-don, the funny pronounciation is because in greek the n before the gutturals was written with "g" (a good example would be the word for angel, aggelos). The consonats are also different, the t and d and r are more like the spanish ones, the english "t" sounds more like a latin "d". I studied the language for some years, if anyone is interested drop me a line, I'd be glad to help you with names and pronounciation. Cheers
