Hey Kieron "What's up?" It sound to me as if you are a bit depressed. As a fellow snake enthusiast, I do wish you a speedy trip out of the "dumps". As for the pet shop, I wouldn't do business with them anymore. I would report them to some kind of animal welfare agency. If you want to check out reptiles, take a trip to the zoo/wildlife park. I can understand your fustration about getting training to become a herpetologist. I pretty much devoted the better half of my life in pursuit of this goal, but to no avail. I've kept snakes beginning at the age of 6, and my first venomous at the age of 14. I even went to veterinary technician school to gain the necessary credentials to work at my local zoo. I voluntered many hours at the zoo, and was on a first name basis with all the employees at the reptile department. I filled out countless applications but nothing ever happened. WHY? Noone ever quits an easy job! And if they do leave, the zoo will move someone over laterally within the zoo. Meanwhile during this pursuit, I've had many a menial job and no bankable skills. Finally, my friend talked me into becoming an electrician. It was the best move I ever made! If I can't work with venomous snakes, by God, I WILL certainly work with something that is HOT! I Believe me, your time will be better served in pursuit of a job/education that will make you money! The majority of people who work with snakes will attest that they are not the most affluent individuals. I don't want to sound like an a-hole, bot these are my real life experiences. Don't give up your passion, but PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE give up your venomoids! That is something I cannot condone as with most people who visit this web-site. Sorry for the long chat, but it sounded like you neede someone to talk to. Take care, and the best of luck to you!

Hi mate , i to know how you feel about wanting to become a herpetologist and you are right its not what you know its who you know . im currently doing my A levals and the ND diploma at derby college before i go of to university to go and do zoology . As a part of my college course i have to do work experiance and i have worked at many places with reptiles but some places i have been the work ex student i have been the most qualified at the same time but they dont care about that . You could send of loads of letters to zoos asking for a month or so voluntary work like i did and some friends did . Thier is a place called proteus in birmingham which do NVQ's on reptiles and i ve heard they teach how to handle the venomous reptiles these are all good for you and if you really wanna take it further go to univeristy . People always ask me what keeps me motivated and i tell them when i did work ex at chester zoo i met the herpetologist and i thought she was an idiot and if she can do it i can . Even with qualifications it dont make you know ya stuff i have computer qualifications it takes me half hour to switch this on . beleave me i ve met some stupid herpetologist and if they can do it i can and so can you
thats enough out of me hope it helps a little
SHAUN

Kieron: I can relate to what Shaun said. Finding a job in Herpetology is tough, but they come available from time to time. If you are in a position to moove to an area with a job opening, it can sure help. I waited several years for an opening at AZP, and even then there were over 400 applicants for that one job. But I had gotten to know the Curators and Zoo Directors in years before, and am sure that helped me get the job. In later years, I was offered jobs as Curator or Asst. Curator at several zoos in Texas, Tenasee, Kentucky, and California, but did not take those jobs due to family obligations that kept me here in Georgia. I have always wondered how different my life would be if I hade taken those jobs. Meeting people in the field is a big help in you finding work with reptiles. Find something else to support yourself while you search, and keep trying. I worked several years as a cabnet maker while waiting for a job in herpetology. Good Luck in your Quest. Best Regards JohnZ

Thanks guys youre right, I have been a bit down but hey got a great three yr old boy called Jake who is the light of my life right now, and belive it or not with NO pushy parenting from me he is an absolute snake fanatic, right now he loves cobras and especially spitters he even asked me to buy him some sun glasses to stop his pretend cobra invenomating his eyes! I also have a Gaboon Viper skull tatooed on my forearm and the word "Gaboon" was a bit difficult for him so he has started learning the latin of a few specific snakes but he can pronounce Bitis Gabonica perfectly, so what i'm trying to say is that hopefully our school system wont let him down as much, and as he is so enthused I fully expect him to appear on the "scene" one day three cheers for Jake lakey who held his first snake not-hot! when he was 1yr11mths. what a dude and thankyou all for your replys cheered me up no end KEEP ON GOING HEY! back to Butchery im afraid its what I CAN do thankyou all again kieron.
