Oh no what a stupid thing that guy is asking - you probably will think as you will read my queastion. So here is: Is biting from Elaphe longissima(zamenis longissima) or Coronella austriaca hurting? I know theyre not venomous but they can wild bite. I would like to catch one (and surely release it then) cause i often meet them on my tours. Can they inject me by teeths(which can pretty hurt) or do they bite only like lizards(which doesnt hurt)?
Thanks in advance.

All Elaphe can bite and leave a half circle of pin prick holes that will bleed for awhile. There could be a small amount of pain, just as there is when you get pricked by a briar bush. If you pull away as the snake bites, there can be some tearing of your skin, as the teeth are backward curved to help the snake hold onto food items. Sometimes this causes the snake to loose a few teeth and leave them in your skin. It can be really impressive if you let a big rat snake chew on you as if it dosent matter as you give a lecture to others. Hope this helps some.

The teeth are a bit longer and sharper (more pointed) than a lizard with the same size head, but the bite is not as hard. It will probably hurt more but not a lot more. Just be gentle while removing him if he doesn't let go because pulling him off (or jerking your hand) will hurt you and the snake more than the bite.

Hey,
There are no stupid questions here. This forum is for learning. The pervious post sum it up pretty well. If you do get bitten try not to jerk back but that is easyer said than done I still jerk sometimes if its on my hand and I'm totaly not expecting it, and I've been bit hundreds of times but like said before it just makes the bite worse in stead of pin pricks it will look like you got cut with a steak knike only not as bad.

I`ve never got bitten by a Coronella, they`re not agressive snakes. And even if it would bite you would probably not feel a thing. Elaphe longissima do bite, I was bitten several times by Elaphe longissima, includin a bite on the face. They have sharp long teeth and the bite will bleed. That`s all ! Don`t worry, it`s not as painfull as it might seem. I for one never worry about a nonvenomous snake biting me when I want to catch it.
Best regards, Alex S.

Million thanks to all. I saw it on many photos as someone hold this snakes and as it pretty chewed his hand, that seemed to be crazy :-). My experiences are only with natrix natrix which are very abundant:-). With the two other snakes they are the only unvennomous snakes witch lives in our country :-((( and i love snakes. We have yet vipera ursinii witch i rather let rest for now.

The northest part of Carpathian mountain chain in the central part of Europe. There lives only 22 amphibians and reptiles together. And that four snakes are very important members of ecosystem of that environment as regulators of little mammals, amphibians and birds.
