first off this is a list of what iv'e seen on my 7 ac
res of heaven this year.
northern copperheads 31 adults 9 neonate
black rats 29 sub-adult/adult
northern black racer 15
northern water 23
northern ringnecks 40+
eastern garters 17 adult 3 neonate
rough green 5
fence lizards 20+
five lined skinks 25+
wild turkeys 200+
various frogs &salamanders 1000+
I only kept 2 unique coppers.now to an observation i made the other day,and my question.these numbers are way down from a few years ago less than half, except for the turkeys which are way up from years past. Now to my observation sunday i saw a female turkey eat a neonate copper,i no it was a neonate copper because i saw the bright yellow tail.now my questions, has anyone else seen turkeys eat or kill snakes, and do you think the rising turkey population has to do with the declining snake population? thanks Mtnviper

Clinton: Sounds like it is time to start stocking the freezer with Thanksgiving and Christmas Turkeys! They are really great when cooked in a smoker. One of the best Turkeys I ever had is a wild one that ran out in front of my truck. I just put it into the cooler, and took it home and smoked it. Turkeys are well known for killing and eating snakes.

Once again, John's on the stick. Clinton, you know, you have brought up one of the best observations, I've heard yet. Something that I haven't even thought to look at on the almost 200 acres in WV that I can now call "my new hunting grounds". The deer is also something that the locals are talking about, in regards to the decline of the timbers in those parts. I've recently been granted permission from an original family "old timer", out in the mountains of WV, where I found a den, exactly where he said his father told him about. That's got to be more than 4 decades ago, that his father spoke of it. This guy told me EXACTLY, I mean he told me how many steps to take, which direction, etc...and I'd come up on an old pasture...not a pasture anymore, it's all overgrown, but you can easily see why it was a pasture at one time. Anyhow, he's got 1700 acres out there and spoke of making hay during the summers and would literally come across a timber every day. He said, "I haven't seen a lot over the past 5 years, but have been seeing more deer, truth be known, I think them deer are killin' 'em off".
Now with this knowledge at hand, why hasn't the 4 or 5 major states in this area, who have them listed as endangered species, come together to figure this out and increase the bag limits on game animals? The all mighty wheel just spins around one more time. Odd isn't it?
Nice observation Clinton.
Cheers,
Matt
