this weekend in an area in central georgia where i have looked for canebrakes but only found dead ones im sad to say that i got news of a canebrake exceding the 4.5 foot mark with 16 buttons killed what makes it worse is i was told it might of had babies, very sorry for the sad post but i feel that the ignorance of people should be realized, and that all i can say here is education and conservation
once again sorry for the sad post but i thought this should be shared

Bryan:
Too bad to hear about the canebrake rattlesnake. You are right though, through Education people can learn, and over time I think more people are becoming more tolerent of rattlesnakes, and all snakes for that matter.
You have to educate the young kids. They are the only hope of learning new ideas. I really do not believe you can change the mind of many of the old, set in their ways folks.
That is why my friend Okefenokee Joe does hundreds of reptile shows at schools each year. He knows that there is a chance of educating kids before they learn to hate snakes.

Bryan,
Here's a quick and simple way of potentially reaching out to some of those would-be assassins.
Why not make a sign or two, post it near the area you found this atrocity. Make it bold, state why the venomous snakes are important to the balance of nature. Say why the local rattlesnake population is endangered, why folk shouldn't kill them, but just watch their step. It may seem like a huge feat to reach out to some people, but a little effort might reach one or two "key" people who could swing the destruction in the snakes' favor.
Just an idea.

My friend informed me that a huge(the biggest he has seen in the wild) canebrake was killed at one of his snake spots. He said that someone beat it with rock and sticks etc.He works at a certain place that is protected and I hope that whoever did it gets caught.

Is this a common event in America as I trully can not belive that some people who live with venomous snakes have not been educated to some degree or would it just be a couple of sick minded and IGNORANT people, they seem hell bent on killing our already diminished populations of Rattlers of all kinds, and I am aware all snakes cop this flak WHAT CAN BE DONE, Signposting the attrocity would be effective but obviously will draw direct attention to the area, is there any form of game control in effect in this area if not, perhaps it is worth talking to the people who can help? perhaps through this site you can gain support for this. so sickend and sorry to hear of such sickening acts. yours sincerely keyz. TRULY SICKEND.
