Today in class (college) my wildlife teacher informed us that most rattlesnake bites are in the face. She explained that it's because rattlesnakes will jump off the ground or lunge off a hook to bite people in the face to get their venom closer to the brain, where there neurotoxic venom will work faster. Then another student told me this was definitley true because its what his professor at his last college studied. From what I understand and have read most bites are on the hands, followed by the feet or ankles. Plus the majority of rattlers aren't primarily nuerotoxic. Where can I find some information that has statistics on where most people get bit that I can print out. It drives me crazy when the teacher says stuff like this. She also said boa and python bites, no matter what size, don't hurt because they don't really penetrate the skin with their teeth.

James: Perhaps you should find a better school to study Wildlife Management, if that is the quality of the teachers there!
By any chance are you willing to post the name of this institute of higher learning, or the name of this talented professor? JohnZ

Hi:
I see your teacher has a common disease "Cranio-Rectal-Inversion"
I just returned from an international snakebite conference and can tell you with certainty <1% are to the face. Men mostly are bitten in the hands and women in the leg/feet because they step on them. I will look in my symposium materials and see if I have the data.
Snake venom is a mixture of many compounds in varying amounts. Rattlesnakes are predominately composed of non neurotoxic components, there are of course exceptions in the US. Rattlers south of the border are mostly neurotoxic secreters. This explaination is over simplified, so your professor maybe able to understand.
Good luck,
Al

As far as the statistics you need to prove this teacher wrong, just go to Google and type ``Snake Bite Statistics.``
You will find hundreds of scholary sites to go to.

I just got back from lab with that teacher. I got a chance to ask her about what she said about rattlers biting people in the face. She said that she meant they always try and bite their prey in the head. When she said it the first time, she talked about them lunging off hooks to get to faces though. I guess she got confused. She kind of redeemed herself a little, she said she really doesn't know much about snakes and that if anyone has a disagreement to let her know so she can get it right. Her field of study is mostly fish, but she's teaching an Intro. to Vertebrate Natural History class. I feel kind of bad for her because she's real nice, but it still drives me crazy when she says stuff thats not right.

Also, I'm planning on doing a graduate program in herpetology. Does anyone have any recommendations for schools with a good herp program. Marshall Univ. in West Virginia is supposed to have a decent one, but I think I'd rather go farther South or West where snakes are a little more varied and plentiful.

Several Schools that I know of that have good programs are University of Kansas, Topeka,Ks; University of Florida, Jacksonville, Fl; University of Georgia: Savannah River Ecology Labatory, Athens, Ga. Their is no true field in Herpetology it is more Zoology with an emphasis on Herpetology.

The University of California has one of the best herpetology programs in the world, an outstanding biology lab, and a reputation for producing very fine herpetologists. Check out their website for more info.
