Most herp collecters will agree, www.tongs.com is the best site for herping equipment, but I was wondering if I was making a huge sacrifice in quality if I were to buy my equipment from www.cheapsnakehooks.com instead. The lower prices just seem too good to be true, anybody familiar with both sites who could help me out?

I ordered some probes from them via ebay along time ago and never got anything. After several emails they told me they did not have my correct address, even though they did (it was provided by me, ebay and paypal) they then refused to ship anything. Several more emails later I was told the person I purchased from (isnt this a business ?) was nolonger with the company and they would not ship me anything or refund my money. They continued to sell on ebay with the same id / contact info for some time, then opend a new account. I would not buy anything from them at all. I cant state what I think of them in a public forum.

Chris: Both companys make good hooks.
There is nothing wrong with a ``cheap``snake hook. It will help you save money for other things like cages, reptile food, and reptile pets.
When you are a little older, and perhaps working to earn some extra money, then you might want to splurge on a designer reptile hook from Midwest or Furmont.
The snakes you catch are not going to care how much you paid for a snake hook, as long as it works and does not break.
It is kind of like buying a pickup truck or jeep, verses a hummer. Both will get you there, but one is fancier and costs more.
My favorite snake hook is one I made myself over 30 years by taking a piece of 3/8 thick stainless steel rod, and heating it with a blow torch until it was cherry red hot, and bending the hook part of it in a vice with a pair of pliars. I then heated the whole thing to straw color by mooving the torch back and forth, and then plunged it into waste motor oil to temper the steel. I then filed the bottom of the hook part flat, and rounded the end. I drilled a hole in a wooden dowl, and epoxied the steel shaft in. I still use this hook every day, and it has travelled all over the country on snake hunting adventures with me. It is just the right size as a short field hook, and strong enough to flip boards and tin, and also makes a great cage hook.
Perhaps you could make something similar yourself, if you take shop at school, or have a home shop. If you want to try, let me know, and I will send you more detailed instructions, and some photos of the hook I made.
Best Regards JohnZ

Chris, from what James has just posted, it seems that the Cheap Hooks company might have changed. I still say they produced good hooks in the past, but that was a few years ago, so perhaps it would be wise to try another company.
The one that Jeremy posted a few days ago produces cheap hooks also, and the quality looks pretty good.

I think I'll go with the "Cheap" website, it wasn't that I had anything against low priced equipment, it was just that I had seen other simmilar products prices much higher, like at tongs.com and it seemd a little fishy. This is what I am going to get: http://cheapsnakehooks.com/products/hooksextendable.htm the 13" to 17". Versitle, yet small enough to fit into my backpack. Thanks for your help.
P.S. I would make my own hook, but I just don't have that kind of talet with a blowtorch, kudos to your own hook designing skills though.

Ha
I made my first hook out of a broken golf club that my dad gave me I took a 5/32 welding rod I beat the flux off then took a pipe and torch I heated the welding rod and bent it around the pipe making a hook then brassed the club and rod together. worked like a charm.
