Richard: You can sex Puff-adders by measuring their tail length and comparing it to their overall length. This could be done with a shed skin if you wanted, or by tubing or compression box.
Total length in Male puffs is 6 to 9 times tail length.
Total length in Female puffs is 11 1/4 to 17 times tail length.

John has nailed it, as he usually does. Let me give one thought that will eliminate the need for a calculator(:
If you have two of the same size, & both tails are the same length, you don't have a pair. If one has a short tail, & the other's is even shorter, the longer tail is on the male. Once you have seen a few, it's really easy.
