Are Mangrove snakes considered to be venomous under the venomous laws in Florida? If so, when were they placed under that law?
Peace Out,

The law currently gives no definition at all for "venomous reptile". Neither do FWC's regulations. Borderline species are open to interpretation what is approved by one inspector may not be by one in another area. I have heard an inspector from another area say that he was told you need a VR permit for a hognose (I've 87% sure he meant a North American hognose)...
That said, I've never heard anyone else from FWC say they considered a hognose venomous, but I'm pretty sure almost all, if not all, of them DO consider a mangrove venomous.
I wouldn't consider getting one without calling FWC headquarters in Tallahassee and asking their opinion. If they say it's OK (which I doubt), call your local office and get their opinion and work from there.

The term venomous, when in terms of legality and permits, is usually 99.9% defined as a venomous snake that is considered "medically significant". Most consider mangrove snakes, twig's, FWC's, and boomer's in that category. Hognose snakes, lyre snakes, vine snakes, and most other colubrid's haven't made any headlines yet.

According to Glades Herp, Mangroves are considered venomous as far as the State of Florida is concerned.
