Hi,
I work out in the California desert near the Arizona boarder and today I captured and released a rattlesnake that I have yet to be able to positively identify. It looked to be about 2 years, possible 3 with about 5-6 rattles. It was aprox. 2'8" to 2'10" in length and 31/2"to 4" in diameter. It carried and odd arrangement of patterns on it that remind me slightly of the speckled rattler, but the body didn't have very clear stripes, more like broken patches with very light tan and white coloration through out its body, but the tip of his tail about 3" above its rattle was a variation of green and yellow color. It was a very aggressive snake and we had to ice him down before I could capture him safely. Looking back now I wish I had tried to I identify it before I let it go. Fortunately a coworker took a few pictures of the capture that can be found at these links:

Any help in identifying this snake would be appreciated. We had one thought that perhaps it was a hybrid of a sidewinder and a Mohave Green, but we were not sure if snakes cross breed. Thanks for any help I can get!

The photos you posted will probably not be of any use in identifying the snake, as it is in deep shadows. Too bad your coworker did not put the snake out in the sun more and get a little closer. JohnZ

Unless those pics were taken with a camera phone or something, I assume they were scaled down. The resolution is too low to tell much about the snake (I can't even tell wich end is which). The original, full resolution photos MIGHT help. If you don't have a way to post them, emailthem to me and I'll post on my site.

I don't think you are likely to find any rock rattlers that big.
It looks like a desert phase Red Diamond Rattlesnake or possibly a Speckled Rattlesnake.
I cannot see any black and white banding on the tail.
Without better pictures, those are the two possibilities that I would stick with.
