I live in the rural Daytona Beach area and we have recently contained three snakes who appear to be the Pygmy variety. Is there someone in this area to contact for removal? I don't want to destroy them, but do have concern for my 3 year old granddaughter if we move them to a different area of our 5 acres.
Thank you,
Karen Neely

Karen, it is good that you do not want to destroy the Pygmy Rattlesnakes. There is a good chance that some of the members here live near you and will contact you about removing the snakes for you.
You might also want to contact:
Jacksonville Herpetological Society, Reptile Rescue Pager at 904) 918-0544 and see if they have someone nearby.
Another possibility would be Snake Getters, at http://www.snakegetters.com/snakephone2.html
They list a Howard Riley, Apopka (407) 467 9976 as the one who handles the dispatching for the Snake Getters volunteer network all over Central Florida.
Hope this helps. Best Regards JohnZ

I can't add much to Mr. Z's response except to give you a site that may help with identifying Florida's venomous snakes.

i'm in the jacksonville herpetological society and they normaly don't come unless you can see the snake and are sure that it's there, give us a call and we will send someone down there next time you see it, check out the website (www.jaxherp.org) and click the link to reptiles of duval county to confirm that it's a pigmy rattler.
we have some members that live nearby so it won't be a problem
best regards,

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've got pretty good pictures from one of the sites and the markings are identical. The three were found too close to the house, captured and are currently contained in a 10 gal aquarium. Our 23 yr old son has been capturing live small frogs and grasshoppers for them for the past three days.
One is about 8 inches and the markings are more smudged. The second is maybe 10-12 inches with the rusty markings more noticeable. The largest is maybe 18-20 inches. I have a digital camera and will try to get a few pics for more positive Id. I'm not "scared" of snakes, think they're pretty cool critters actually. We've had quite a bit of development recently out in this area and I'm sure they are just looking for a meal. I feed the birds, deer and wild turkeys, so I expect snakes in my space too. Already had to put one back outside that found his way in, was just a garter snake, but didn't need to be in the house. I appreciate the snake's role in my yard and know that he's in the food chain too.
Thanks again, sorry for ramblin' on
Karen

Hello again.
I have uploaded a picture of my suspected pygmy to the photo album on this site. I hope one of you may be able to positively id it for me. If they aren't pygmys and are not venomous, then I'll set them free. Just wanting to err on the side of caution.
Thanks for your help.

just as a heads up, the fines in florida for keeping a venomous reptile are pretty steep and because you already have it i would suggest that you take it somewhere rural and release it, just don't let the rangers see you

Thanks to each of you who answered my post about the pygmys. I contacted a local (who turns out to be a neighbor) and he picked up the three snakes this evening. They are to be released on his property which is also rural. This is a great site and very helpful, I'll be passing it on to friends. Thanks for the links, they are what helped me find a rescue person. He did confirm that the three we had confined were of the Dusky variety.
