hey everyone, i had someone tell me that rattlers will bite themselfs and inject venom as a pain killer if they are injured. i never heard that before and i asked where he heard it and he said "Out of a textbook while I was attending vet school, and again from The man who taught me before school when my dad worked for him by the name of Bill Haast."
not sure if he just made that up or not so i thought this would be a good place to ask. thanks for any replys take care everyone

Jason: This is one I have never Heard but, I don’t think it’s True. I have never Heard of Rattlesnakes Biting themselves to Kill Pain. On the other hand, I have had them to Bite themselves when I picked them up with my Tongs, but, that was only them missing me and Biting their self.
So, I would venture to say the Man told you wrong. Also, I would tend to think Mr. Bill Haast would know better than to tell anyone such things (in other words, I don’t think he did). Bill Haast is High Revered by a lot of People in the Venomous Reptile Community, and anyone that knows the Work he has done would know that he knows better.
I think it was just a Tall Tell, you know one of those “Around A Beer Tells ” “LOL”

yea i thought he was just saying that but wanted some input, i would love to be able to prove him wrong 100% tho but ill wait till i have something to say. thanks for the reply

That would be a pain killer? Rattlesnake venom causes excruciating pain. If the vet school textbook really had that passage in it, someone needs to edit vet textbooks a little better.

sounds just as dumb as those kids who slit their wrists to releive the pain, lol, whoever told you this is definatly wrong, i spend alot of time with these snakes and they never intentionaly bight themselves
