I have been reading a lot of posts about young hot keepers about handling methods. I would like EVERY hot keeper to make a mental checklist before going into a cage and realize the consequences.
I suggest ALL venomous keepers (young and old) to find the best photos of venomous snake bites, blow them up, frame them, and hang these photos over the cages your critters reside in. Every time you plan to go into that cage, look at that photo and ask yourself, "Is it REALLY necessary to handle that snake today for a photo?" Look at the photo again and realize the potential consequences. Maybe, just maybe, taking a look at that photo might dissuade you from going into that cage on that particular day and might save your life. My philosophy is; The more times you go into that cage, the chances of you getting tagged go up astronomically.
I would also like to address to the young herpers out there; Don't take offense to the older herpers who offer you critisisim. They mean well. When I was younger I came across the same critisisim and when you get older, you will do the same (I hope) to correct a young hot keeper who might be doing something to endanger his/her life. They just want you to be safe. A fifth grade teacher once told me; "God gave you two ears and one mouth. Don't you think He was trying to tell you something?" (In other words, listen twice as much as you speak!) Remember, a venomous bite by any one of us affects us ALL. It is OUR responsibility to be as careful as humanly possible.
Happy herpin' to all and BE SAFE!
(P.S. Oh, by the way, I have never been bitten. Came close twice, and as always, it was my fault.)

I do believe I have heard that once before from someone else. However, I find it to be a great idea, and it gives you a second to think about what the animal your working with has the potential of doing. For some photos of envenomations you can go to the following web site...

the picture on the cage thing is a very good idea, i dont own any hots yet, but when i do, i think i will try that. I have the patients, but my brother, natedog08 doesnt. (I think the best way to find out if you have the patients for something is to go deer hunting. If they sit all day long waiting, they are patient, if not, they dont have patients.) I think he would go right to the cage and get himself bitten.
P.S Have you seen the pictures of venomous snake bites on this sight? some of them are really bad.

i also think that is a great idea to put a pic of a bite on the cage. im 15 myself, and although i love these amazing animals to death, i will not aquire any until i am in my own house with my own liabilities. as for the "its only one time" theory, im sorry but i dont agree with that at all. there is absolutely no reason to handle any venomous snake, unless of course it needs medical treatment. most other procedures can be carried out safely by using the proper tools and never coming into physical contact with the snake. just my $.02.
herp-master, what part of PA are you in? im located near Pittsburgh if thats anywhere near you.

Excellent idea with the pics!!!
I completely agree with you on the young v.s. experienced keeper criticism. I myself have been (I confess) in both situations already.
