I've been hangin out here for awhile , and learned quite a bit , for which I'm grateful . But I see division here , younger versus older , things like that , and don't understand the reason for it . We are interested in venomous reptiles , that makes us a tiny minority , in a world full of people who hate and fear these animals . Some here know all the scientific names and I've seen somebody on this site say that he won't even bother talking to anyone who doesn't . It hasn't seemed like a real friendly place , which is a shame , because if somebody gets curious and tries to find info on the net , this place pops right up on websearch . If somebody comes here asking basic questions and gets badly treated , we just turned that person into a " hater " Is there really any reason we can't be a little more agreeable ?

I agree with you. There are some people who feel the need to squeeze the enjoyment out of things for others by insisting that if its not done their way then its being done wrong and the outside world is going to burst in and stop everything that everyone is doing everywhere and then we will all have to pay for it. And then there are those who don't think that everyone is watching them all the time because they know aren't important enough for anyone to take any notice of them at all so what they do won't affect the world one bit.

There are always going to be people who have a greater than thou, holier than thou, I won't answer your question until you fill in your profile BS, type of attitude. But, it's just like that in the real world. You have to ignore it, accept it, deal with it, and move on. If you're criticized about something, blow it off, it happens to everyone. Learn from it.
It's happened to me in the last 7 or so years I've come here, and it's happened to some of the most experienced and knowledgable people I've met, by people less knowledgable than them. It's how you react to it that will set you apart, and maybe gain some respect. But, there will still be people that think they are better than you, no matter where you are, or what you're doing. However, if someone very young posts an easy question and shows pictures of him holding a snake in a careless way for a photo op, they're going to get an attitude and criticized. If someone asks a question about how to handle and care for a snake species that they just bought, and didn't take the time to learn before buying it, they're going to get an attitude and crticized. AND THEY SHOULD. There are alot of people in here that take time and fight for the right's to keep snakes, and fight legislation, as well as help newer keepers. So it gets annoying seeing someone irresponsible forcing the experienced keeper to have to take two steps back from forward progress because of someone else's actions. You have to deal with the attitude's. I still have to deal with some from people who haven't been keeping as long as me, some that I've given valuable info to. It's just part of the game.
This forum goes through alot of changes every few years or so, it'll change again, and again after that.
If you can deal with the attitudes, the holier than thou hypocrites, the know it all kids, and the differences of opinions, you'll be fine. You have to have tough skin to be a hot keeper, and have tough skin in life as well.

PLEASE, LET'S END THIS DEBATE! Let's get on with the passion of herpetology! (By the way "tj" your reply was eloquently stated. I couldn't agree with you more.)

It wasn't meant as criticism , I just thought I'd point out the fact that this is the impression given sometimes .I've been coming here awhile , but wasn't sure I wanted to post or ask questions , because of it . We do ourselves no favor that way .

I would say that I fall more in the second description of my last entry. I don't think I am important enough to be noticed by the world so my effect on "the hobby" is nil. For some reason, when I keep talking about my Forest Cobra and trying to get a Care Sheet out of someone I get what to me is a contradictory answer. I'm told that I have already been told that people don't like to keep them and here I am asking about it again. And then I'm told to just ask questions about how to take care of it and people will tell me. Soooooo.... I ask about it again and get the same answers to just ask questions and I'll be told. I'm caught in a vortex. :P So, the experts are too busy to write a Care Sheet on the Forest Cobra soooo... I figured I'd take what people told me and put it into a Care Sheet that tells how people ACTUALLY take care of their animals. And it would be a Verbal Care Sheet. And by that i mean that I would want people to NOT open any books or consult any websites butt to tell me what they know for a fact. No one knows everything, so I would anticipate this Care Sheet to have a LOT of Contributors that will be referenced and since ALL of the info comes thru this website it truly would belong to it and no one else. So no individual gets paid for it.
Since I have been told over and over and over what a mistake I made buying my Forest Cobra and what an insignificant peon I am compared to the least worthy novice pre-teen, I feel highly qualified to take on this job of gathering the wisdom of others. I just hope and pray that Thou wouldst spare the lash from mine back as Thy servant doest toil anon even unto death.
