Greg: There are a lot of good Non-Venomous Specimens, that you could Choose from. I would hate to see you get a Pygmy, Gaboon, or any other Extremely Hot Snake, then read in the Paper that a 14-Year Old was Bitten by a Gaboon Viper and he lost his Arm or Leg in the process.
I hope that you will take the advice of all these Members that know what they are talking about, it could save your life. Remember, Venomous Snakes are not Pets, they are full of responsibility and will Weed Out those that are not careful and those that have no experience.
Be Safe Ya’ll, Happy Herping : Wally

As a matter of fact:
Kansas
Category: B*
Summary of Law: No person may possess or breed a dangerous regulated animal as a "pet." Dangerous regulated animals include the following: lion, tiger, leopard, jaguar, cheetah, mountain lion, hybrid of a large cat, bear, or venomous snake. Persons who are licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture and hold an Animal Welfare Act license are exempt as well as zoos accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association, a wildlife sanctuary, research facility, etc.
B* = Partial ban on private ownership of exotic animals — allows ownership of some exotic animals but precludes ownership of the animals listed

Yeah, now that I think about it... It was early this year or late last year that Kansas was taken down by the Animal Protection Institute (API). It is the same bill we are fighting here in NC right now.

Gregory, it sounds like you have the misfortune to live in a State that has outlawed venomous reptile keeping, mostly because the legislators that you folks in Kansas elected to office were influenced, and probably paid off, by the animal rights activests..
For that reason, it is even more important you sign up with a Herpetological Group like the Kansas Herpetoligical Society, because if they have any chance at all of overturning the laws, it will be because they have a large number of members / voters.
For now, I would suggest that you attend that upcoming reptile show to try to purchase a legal Chondropython to pair up the one you have. It would give you a chance to meet other folks who are also being hurt by the same nit-wit laws. If you join the herp groups I mentioned, you will be adding your voice to their efforts to overturn the bad laws in your state.
Also, if you are just itching to work with venomous snakes, perhaps there is a zoo, or nature center, or individual educator in your area who does have a venomous reptile permit. Perhaps you can voulenteer to help that person, and get a chance that way to work with venomous snakes.
Hope this helps. Best Regards JohnZ

I believe a Copperhead would be the way to start. I started with, and still have, a Copperhead. You would not get a 50 caliber gun for your first gun. Any mistake would be bad, but one with a Gaboon would be horrific. Take your time, learn, learn, learn, and be safe. Good luck!
