Hi all,Ive been interested in catching and identifying venomous reptiles. We dont have many here in central illinois, but see plenty when i go hunting for wild boar.I have many non venomous reptiles but have no clue on handling venemous.I have read many articles on handling but i have the common sense not to try it.Are there courses i can take,or any way i can learn safetly?Im not some young kid trying to impress his buddies.Im a 37 year old steelworker, married, with a 6 year old son who is infected with reptile addiction like his father.Im just curious and would like to expand my experiences with snakes. Thank You
Paul

Well being a mature adult, noone is going to stop you from capturing venomous reptiles(at least not me). I think it's great your interested. You mentioned reading articles, well thats a start. Read as much literature as possible. When herping, have the confidence that you can identify any single species of snake you encounter, and deal with them accordingly. I recommend contacting your states herpetologist, and asking if there is an annual hot handling class or seminar. I think there is here in Missouri. Watching other experienced handlers is a definite head start. Just know the danger your putting yourself in from the beginning. To cut short, I enjoy very much myself, studying venomous snakes in thier natural habitat, however I recommend using the safest equipment possible to do any handling. Tongs and hooks are great tools for giving you a great view of the animal, while keeping your fingers out of reach. The copperhead stretches into southern Illinois. The Timber Rattlesnakes trickles into your area. You also have the Masassauga Rattlesnake. Theres a lot more info and advice you shoud read of and seek out, but this was a bit for you. Good herping.
