I currently keep Gaboons, Rhinos, all kinds of rattlers, several types of cobras and many different pit vipers. I am looking for the best gloves to protect against snake bite. Is there even a glove out there that can with stand a Gaboon Viper's bite? With there fangs, the amout of force they are capable of and there lightning fast speed, is there a GABOON proof glove on the market? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and be safe!!!

Well I know it is usually hard to get any kind of a guarantee from any particular company, just because of the risk there. I know that Midwest products has a pair of heavy duty gloves meant for handling venomous snakes, and I'm sure they are sold elsewhere as well. They are claimed to be puncture proof, however I'm not sure of the extent, and if they have been tested with large fanged snakes or not. I think the gloves would be good in case of accidents, but I don't think they should necessarily give any room to be any less careful. I might get me some in the future as well. ----Anthony

Personally i know of no such thing. I have heard of people using gloves with limited success, usually with elapids. It is a very dangerous practice with vipers, i know of one particular individual using gloves for cottonmouths who was envenomated when a fang went into the seem of the glove. As far as gaboons, i dont know any glove i would trust to save my life from those fangs.

I use a pair of Midwest gloves(without staples) when working with my Gila Monsters and can tell you from experience that they have no problem fully penetrating the gloves. I don't know if a viper would be able to accomplish this since they have hollow, relatively fragile fangs but I surely wouldn't want to find out the hard way!

I think that bgf did a little research on this and found a monacled cobra could chew thru in less than a minute...
i don't think he did any tests with a full strike from a viper though,
i'm sure they are used as failsafe items only...

Go to www.tongs.com and read Bryan Fry's review of midwest's gloves. It's a good article and should answer your questions.
Good luck,

They sure didn't resist the bite of my male Gila LOL! His teeth went through quickly and cleanly without chewing. But don't get me wrong, I'm sure the effects would have been much worse if I had not been wearing them.

Because of the way a Gila monster bites -- like a bulldog -- I would not advise using the Midwest gloves with them. However, if you were wearing the gloves when a Gila monster bit your hand, I would suppose that most of the venom would be absorbed by the leather, since of course Gila venom is injected via capillary action along grooves in the teeth. So take your pick. Caveat bitis?
