Sounds like that may have been a very lucky find. I knew there were a couple Vipera species in Northern Africa. But never heard of any in SA.

Vipera ammodytes, (Sandviper or Nose-horned Viper), doesn't occur in Africa period. It's range includes southern Europe, plus portions of the country of Turkey and the state of Georgia located in Asia. This viper's bite is considered potentially the most dangerous than that of any widespread European Viper.
I can't find any listing for a so called long-nosed viper?

Donald.. are you sure that you have the right species? What did this snake look like, and what part of SA did you find it?
