John,
I am old school all the way(even though I'm 37). Snakes and Snake Hunting is my favorite book. I also enjoy "Cobras in his Garden", "Life with Ionides", and "Giant Snakes" along with "Snakes Alive and how they live" by Clifford Pope.
I actually search for old books when I go to shows, especially Daytona. The older books paint a picture in your mind and take you back to those times.

There are many times while I am herping here in Texas that I look around and my mind wanders back to those black and white photos in the old books showing "rattlesnake habitat" and I think about how I used to say to myself "one day I'm going to go there!", and man....I'm a kid all over again.

I know what you mean Doug.
At my Elementary School library, I checked out the Ditmar`s books hundreds of times.
I eventually got my own copy of "Field Book of Snakes" by Karl P. Schmidt and D. Dwight Davis.
What a wonderfull book it was for a kid who wanted to learn about reptiles. Eventually it was replaced with Roger Conant`s Field Guide, but for many years I read and re-read the Schmidt and Davis book, and wondered if I would ever be fortunate enough to find some of the rare creatures mentioned in the book. Rare animals like Milk Snakes, Corn Snakes, or perhaps even a Rattlesnake !
At the last Columbia Reptile Show I had a fine copy of that Field Guide for sale on my table. I had it priced at $10.00, I would have made a whole $1.00 profit if it had sold. I was keeping the price low so that some young herper could afford a copy. No young folks payed any attention to it at all. My good friend Heyward came by the table and noticed the book, and told me I had it priced way too low. Gosh, what a strange world we live in these days...........

John, there are about four or five book dealers at Daytona. But sometimes you come across someone selling books and snakes so you may luck out. I bought Klaubers book on Rattlesnakes as a paperback for $10.00 there last year. I also found a old edition of Haast's Cobras in his Garden for $40.00. I love old books. Did Heyward buy the book? Why don't you come down for the show in August?

Paul, I just might make it down for part of the Daytona Show. Heyward allready had a copy of that book, but went home with a different book he liked.

Ok this is another old post that I'm ressurecting, but its one that as a young Herper (27) I should take a minute and reply to, since its directed at herper's like myself.... so here goes....
Raymond Lee Ditmars - no
Karl P. Schmidt - no
Robert Inger - no
C.J.P. Ionides - no
Carl Kauffeld - no
Manny Rubio - no
Laurance Klauber - no
Sherman Minton - no
Findley G. Russel - no
Grace Olive Wiley - no
Howard K. Gloyd - no
Clifford Pope - yes
Bill Haast - yes
But I do recognize the names of these early Herpetologists from the names of many of my favorite species of snakes. So I'm quite interested in anything written by them.
Am I wasting my time trying to sell older books to folks who have no appreciation of herping in the past?
No, because there will always be young dedicated people like myself who will have an appreciation for those who came before me, and will want to read, learn, and then build upon the knowledge that they passed to me with their writings.
Has the instant gratification of Google robbed young folks from the desire to read books any more?
Sadly, the internet has, for the vast majority of society, killed the desire and need for book reading. But I still hold a great fondness for books, you can't take the internet with you into the desert to identify reptiles.
So my survey question is this:
Do you folks know the herpers of the past? - Some of them.
Do you gave a sh-- about the herpers of the past? - Yes, very much so, our feild of study was built upon their work.
Do you folks read books anymore? - Yes, everyday.
Have you folks read a herp book in the last year? - Yes, more than a few.
I would be interested in purchasing all of the books you listed in your post... please send me prices and I will happily buy them from you.
