I just read in my local paper,(in NC),that a man from here beat an Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake to death while he was vacationing on Hilton Head Island,SC. The sub-title of the article reads, "While at the beach,* * fought an eastern diamondback and won."
After seeing so many posts here about senseless and ridiculous things that people do, I thought I would share this story. The man's claim was that he "was forced to beat a nearly 5-foot rattlesnake to death."
After not posing a direct threat to the man or his companions, and also not striking, the snake swam into the water. The man said the the snake was swimming in the direction of an area where other people were swimming and playing. I suppose this was when he decided he had to kill the snake, to protect the other people!
The man went on to say he believed the rattler was "going after the chicken left in his truck",(he had been crabbing on the beach). The killer also said, "he knew if he hit the snake's head just the right way, it would die from its own venom...Luckily I didn't miss because I don't know what the snake would have done".
I don't think the EDB enjoys legal protection in South Carolina, but if it did, I would certainly pursue turning this guy in to the authorities.

The EDB is a 'species of high conservation concern' here in South Carolina. Unfortunately I don't think that carries any legal protection. The worst we could do to that particular moron is to try to educate him into remorse. Unfortunately ignorance is bliss, and people really enjoy being happy.
Let him kill a potentially much more dangerous dolphin headed toward the swimmers, then see what kind of news coverage he gets.
