Does anyone have any techniques for capturing coral snakes? Do they respond best to hooks or tongs? I will be beginning a study of the status of coral snakes in Arkansas soon.....any information on coral snake siteings in the state would be very helpful. Thanks for your help!

I have watched several veterans (including Bill Haast) capture and handle coral snakes, although I have very little experience with them myself. They are usually grabbed by the rear fourth of the body and are supported at the front of the body with a hook. To milk them, Bill Haast doesn't pin their heads, but rather he holds them by the tail with one hand and allows the palm of his other hand to support the middle of the body. He then slowly pulls them backward by the tail until the head is between the thumb and forefinger of his supporting hand. He then clamps down on the neck with his thumb and forefinger. BE WARNED: You do not want the smell of any other reptiles on your hands when you pick up a coral snake. While they seem quite placid generally, they will attack tenaciously anything that smells like food.
Midwest's heavy duty gloves would probably work well when handling coral snakes, since their fangs are so short and stubby. Go to Tongs.com for more info.
