I was asked about this myself. A person told me they and their family took a trail (horse) ride up a mountain here in WV , and one horse stumble apon a Timber Rattler, the guide (WV Park Official) killed it, How could they get away with that? Just curious.

I have met several State Park Rangers who feel that snakes do not belong in the parts of their parks that people use and have no qualms at all about killing any snakes venomous or not.
National Wildlife Refuges seem to weigh in on the other end of the spectrum with their Rangers all too willing to try to confiscate snake hooks / tongs / etc and issue tickets.
It is strange that this goes on.

Not only this time, but 8 years ago on our honeymoon, my wife and I went to Smoke Hole Caverns here in WV, it was on April 3rd (the day we were there) it was 8:00AM and their was a 3.1 ft male Timber by the enterance way, the guide comes out and I ask him if he had a stick or something that I could use to catch it.(since at that time I did not), and before I could react he went to beating the living SH--! out of it.!!! I did bring the carcass home to later disect it, (I still have a piece of skin) man what a A--Hole guide that was!
