Alligator found...... In Illinois????

Yes, My uncle lives in Crest Hill, IL... Late saturday night i recieved a phone call from my aunt claiming my uncle had found an alligator... Intrigued, I rushed over to there house, the gator was 30" and some change and very dehydrated... I was exteremly enraged that an individual that irresponsible had access to such an awsome animal only to release it... This is dissapointing as well as the fact the gator didnt make it through the night... The fact that alligators are Illegal to own in IL coupled with the fact that exotic 24 hr vets are extremly hard to find in the state of IL made saving this animal that much more difficult...

My wildlife center is in the northeastern corner of Illinois and we rescue approximately 20-30 crocodilians every year (mostly american alligators). It's actually legal to keep gators in Illinois AS LONG AS you possess an endangered and threatened species permit from the IDNR. But, once they reach adult sizes, are considered a "life threatening" animal under the Dept of Ag's "Dangerous Animals Act" which typically has jurisdication over pet stores and NOT the general public. This gets even more confusing when each town, village, and city can enact their own ordinances to ban any herp they see fit. Most just adopt the Dangerous Animals Act rather blindly w/out ever realizing what the intent of that act is.
That's too bad about the gator. I have 6 at my home right now and a few at my wildlife center that were rescued from area ponds, streams and lakes...unbelievable.
